Domestic machine knitted triptych tapestries using recycled and surplus yarns.
My postgraduate thesis was directed towards addressing waste within the knitted textile sector of the fashion industry. I used recycled and surplus yarns discarded from commercial fashion manufacturing and curated multiple outputs including garments and a triptych tapestry art installation, effectively eliminating waste in the process. The research underscored the viability of repurposing surplus yarn for innovative creations. However, it also shed light on the difficulties of introducing and integrating waste-reducing and mindful design methods within an industry that largely supports the speed and cost effective benefits aligned with mass-production.
